He was a troubleshooter, a problem-solver, the person you called in a crisis. He would charm one and all and assimilate into the lives of people he was helping. They would start believing in him, following him, hanging on to every word he said. So much so, that when their problems were over and he left, they would wish for a bigger crisis, for then he would come back to fix it, and would stay longer.
